Manchester United respond to Donny van de Beek loan enquiries

Manchester United have fielded several loan enquiries for unsettled summer signing Donny van de Beek.

The Netherlands international has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since his £40million summer move from Ajax and has been restricted to just two Premier League starts.

Van de Beek has been an unused substitute in each of United’s last six Premier League matches and played an extremely limited role in his side’s ascent to the top of the table.

With the European Championships on the horizon, the 23-year-old could be forgiven for growing concerned for his international prospects, but United are set to resist the temptation to allow him to leave, even on a temporary basis, this month.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were knocked out of the EFL cup by rivals Manchester City earlier this month, but remain in contention for the FA Cup and Europa League, while they currently lead the chasing pack in the Premier League by two points at the halfway stage.

The Norwegian is desperate to end the season with silverware and to that end is unwilling to trim his squad any more than is necessary. That means keeping hold of Van de Beek, who is in line for a more prominent role in the second half the campaign, according to ESPN.

United will also rebuff offers for the likes of Brandon Williams and Axel Tuanzebe, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping Jesse Lingard can be convinced to stay until the end of the season.

As well as the need to maintain a big squad due to the sheer number of fixtures, Solskjaer is keen to guard against the prospect of Covid-19 potentially decimating his squad.

United have been largely unaffected by the virus since the summer when Paul Pogba tested positive, but the France international is now back to full fitness and is, arguably, in the best form of his United career.

City, meanwhile, were rocked by the news that Sergio Aguero contracted the virus this week, delaying his latest comeback attempt, while the club was forced to postpone last month’s game against Everton due to an outbreak.
