Manchester United outcast says his goodbyes ahead of January transfer

Sergio Romero has said goodbye to Manchester United staff members ahead of a January transfer window exit.

The Argentina international’s time at Old Trafford has ended on a sour note after five years of acting as a capable understudy to David de Gea.

Romero was left frustrated after being dropped for Manchester United’s Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla in August and pushed for an exit only to see a move blocked.

He played in virtually every cup game last season apart from the semi-finals United reached but slipped further down the pecking order after Dean Henderson was recalled from his loan from Sheffield United.

Henderson started the Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night, however.

Romero’s contract expires at the end of the season but he has already bid his farewells to those at the club, according to Manchester Evening News.

He hasn’t trained with the club since the beginning of the year and is hopeful he will be allowed to seal a move away.

His hopes of leaving in the summer were dashed, with Manchester United’s board blocking any exit.

To add insult to injury, the veteran goalkeeper was then left out of their Premier League and Champions League squads.

His wife, Eliana Guercio, accused Manchester United of a lack of respect in an Instagram post after his exit was blocked.

There were good times for the 33-year-old at Old Trafford, though.

He started in their Europa League final triumph over Ajax in 2017, while also picking up FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Community Shield winner’s medals.
